Dual study programme in computer science | Apprenticeship at VAHLE

As a dual student in our IT team, you will learn how complex IT systems are designed, implemented and customised for users. You will be supported by friendly colleagues who you are always welcome to talk to. As an IT expert, you will be the first point of contact for all technical matters. This could be a crashed computer, the installation of new IT systems, the maintenance of devices or repairs of all kinds. You will also teach users how to use applications correctly in training courses and learn how to administer servers, networks and information security systems.

The nine-semester dual study programme at VAHLE takes place in cooperation with Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. It combines a high-quality computer science degree programme with training as an IT specialist for system integration, i.e. in-company training. As a dual student, you will not attend a vocational school, but will learn the theoretical content of the training and the degree programme at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. This gives you a double qualification right at the start of your career:

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Computer Science Dual

As planned, you will complete the apprenticeship in the sixth semester with the IHK examination and the degree programme in the ninth semester with the B.Sc. degree.

Study structure: theory, practice and specialisation

The dual computer science programme is optimally structured:

A maximum of three days of theory at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts and at least two days of practical work at VAHLE per week
First semester: basics of programming, algorithms, data structures, operating systems and computer architectures
Advanced modules: Information security, IT management, mathematics for computer science and theoretical computer science
From the third semester: specialisation in software engineering, network engineering or digitalisation management. Network technology & system integration is a compulsory elective, as it covers the important areas of designing, monitoring and optimising modern IT systems (IT landscape - architecture and structure of company-wide IT systems, monitoring & fault analysis - detecting and rectifying system errors, virtualisation & cloud computing - setting up and managing cloud infrastructures & virtual networks)
Practical phases in the fourth and seventh semesters to apply the knowledge directly in our real IT projects

The programme is taught in German.

Prerequisites

The dual study programme at VAHLE requires at least a high school diploma and good grades in German, maths and English. In addition, curiosity and a thirst for knowledge in the field of computer science are essential. You must be prepared to learn independently and to invest a corresponding amount of time, even outside your working hours.

Support services

We pay your semester fees for the dual study programme up to and including the ninth semester. We will support you individually, you can carry out the necessary project work and practical phases at VAHLE and also use some of your working time for this. Your trainer will be happy to help you with any subject-specific questions at any time.

University of Applied Sciences and duration of study

The dual study programme in computer science is carried out in cooperation with Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. You will learn the theoretical basics by attending the University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the practical aspects in our company. The degree programme usually lasts nine semesters; after just three years, you will sit the examination for training as an IT specialist for system integration at the Dortmund Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
