Rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes are key to flexible yard operations in container terminals. Their mobility between container aisles makes them ideal for high-throughput, dynamic stacking operations — but traditionally, that flexibility came at the cost of high maintenance and increased emissions.
Modern electrified RTG (eRTG) systems help U.S. terminals reduce operating costs, improve sustainability and enable automation. VAHLE Inc. provides fully integrated electrification systems — combining continuous power delivery, high-speed data communication and precise crane positioning — engineered for demanding port environments and high-duty cycles.
RTG electrification is typically implemented using conductor rail systems. VAHLE supports multiple configurations, including a manual plug-in collector concept, a semi-automatic arm system or a fully automatic power solution using telescoping connectors to supply continuous power and enable integrated data transmission. These high transmission capacity systems enable RTGs to operate continuously in fixed aisles while supporting remote control, real-time monitoring and safety-critical data transmission.

With the SMGX, the tried-and-tested SMGM system has been adapted for outdoor use. It is based on the functional principle of the SMGM, but has particularly robust mechanical components and also guarantees significantly higher tolerances.
